Why ACTIVE English Works

Teaches language skills through spiral progression

ACTIVE English teaches language skills systematically in a spiral, progressive way at increasing levels of difficulty. As students progress through the levels it enables them to build upon small successes leading to mastery. This makes learning English easy.

Letter writing taught in spiral progression from Grade 1 to Grade 5:

  • Students fill in the blanks with information about themselves.

  • Students fill in the blanks with information that may not be familiar to them - possible options are provided.

  • The letter becomes longer, and the options are more complex. The exercise maintains a high level of scaffolding.

  • This exercise provides students with an example of an informal letter, and requires them to then write their own letter in the same form.

  • Its corresponding Workbook exercise begins with a scaffolded exercise, where students can select phrases to use.
  • The next exercise has students writing independently with the aid of the provided format.

  • The next level explores emails. Again, the format is provided for students’ reference.

  • Its corresponding exercise in the Workbook gives students helpful pointers and requires them to frame the email themselves.

  • In Grade 5, students progress to formal letters. This exercise is scaffolded as it provides an example for reference.

  • Its corresponding exercise in the Workbook presents students with a blank space, where they are expected to write an entire letter independently. It draws upon and is the culmination of what they have learnt over the years through the programme.
